🚨 The Forest Service is facing massive staffing cuts and our public lands are paying the price. 🚨

Fewer rangers. Closed visitor centers. No water at trailheads. Reduced fire prevention. Our forests are being neglected.

Right now, the USDA has opened a public comment period on their reorganization plan and they need to hear from YOU before August 26.

🌲 Why it matters:

Public lands like our forests may feel wild, but they’re not invincible. Without people, funding, and stewardship, trails erode, trash piles up, and fire risk grows.

🗣 What you can do:

✅ Recreate responsibly: pack it in, pack it out, stay on trails, and do your part.
✅ Submit a public comment to the USDA (QR code in these slides) it only takes 2 minutes to make your voice heard.

Another successful Idaho weekend to visit my favorite tiny human.

Join Oak Creek Watershed Council on September 4, 2025 for a cleanup at one of the most popular day use sites in the area - Grasshopper Point!

We will be giving some TLC to Oak Creek after the last big holiday of summer!

We will meet at the main parking area at 8:15am for waivers, morning snacks, and a brief safety talk. All cleanup materials will be provided by the Oak Creek Watershed Council; all you need to bring is water, sun protection, and positive energy.

Once we’ve finished our cleanup, we will weigh what we’ve collected, take a group photo, and hand out some thank-you goodies before parting ways!

Who are We?

The Oak Creek Watershed Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to preserving the health and integrity of Oak Creek. Oak Creek is a perennial, spring-fed stream that stretches fifty miles from its headwaters in Oak Creek Canyon, and flows through Sedona, Page Springs, and Cornville to its confluence with the Verde River. As one of the last free-running streams in Arizona, Oak Creek is a precious jewel of riparian habitat in the desert Southwest, where human activity has destroyed over 90% of all rivers and streams.

With increased tourism and visitation, Oak Creek’s unique riparian ecosystem is being challenged like never before. Sedona alone gets an estimated three million visitors per year, and many of those visitors naturally want to be in or around Oak Creek. It’s simply beautiful, and a great place to be – particularly in warm weather. Sadly, the result is massive increases to littering, wildlife disruption, habitat degradation, and microbial contamination. Oak Creek is being loved to death.

Oak Creek Watershed Council works to mitigate that through stewardship engagement; partnering with local agencies and interest groups; outreach and education; and scientific monitoring.

Arizona’s 1.17 million acres of inventoried roadless areas are some of the wildest, most irreplaceable lands in the stateand they protect far more than just beautiful views.

They span every corner of our public lands:

🌵 Tonto National Forest – The Arizona Trail winds through the Mazatzal and Boulder IRAs, the Goldfield IRA borders Saguaro Lake, and the Picacho IRA lines the Salt River, offering epic backdrops for hikers, boaters, and campers.

🏜 Kaibab National Forest – Roadless stretches on the North Rim connect Grand Canyon National Park to Vermilion Cliffs and Grand Staircase-Escalante, creating vital wildlife corridors for species like elk, mountain lions, and bighorn sheep.

🏞 Coronado National Forest – The Whetstone Mountains IRA protects the uplands feeding Kartchner Caverns, a living cave system still forming and home to rare, newly discovered species. This forest’s IRAs also anchor the Sky Islands, a biodiversity hotspot where jaguars and ocelots roam.

🌲 Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest – Roadless areas around the Blue Range Primitive Area are part of the largest unroaded landscape in the lower 48, home to wolves, trout streams, and over 400 species of wildlife.

These areas are also natural wildfire buffers. Fires start 6x more often near roads than in roadless areas. Once a road is built, the impacts are permanent: habitat fragmentation, invasive species, and loss of the solitude that makes these places so special.

Recently the government announced its intent to rescind the Roadless Rule. A public comment period is coming soon, and your voice matters. Here’s how to help:

1️⃣ Watch for the official notice from the U.S. Forest Service.
2️⃣ Submit your comment online (link will be posted when open).
3️⃣ Share why Arizona’s roadless areas matter to you—personal stories about hiking, hunting, fishing, or cultural significance are powerful.
4️⃣ Encourage friends, family, and outdoor groups to comment, too.

Once these wild places are gone, they’re gone forever. Let’s keep Arizona wild, connected, and roadless.

Wildfire in 2025 is fundamentally different from wildfire a century ago for a mix of ecological, climatic, and human-caused reasons and it’s not just that we notice them more now.

Here are three ways fires are fundamentally different than they were 100 years ago.

1. Climate Change Supercharges Fire Conditions in a variety of ways.:

- Hotter, drier weather: Average global temperatures have risen significantly since the early 1900s, leading to longer, hotter summers and shorter, warmer winters.
- Earlier snowmelt: In many mountain regions, snowpack melts weeks earlier, leaving vegetation dry for longer periods.
- Mega-droughts: The American West and other regions are experiencing the most severe droughts in centuries, making fuels tinder-dry.

2. Changing Vegetation Patterns:

- Past logging practices, invasive species, and suppression have altered forests.
- In the U.S. West, invasive cheatgrass creates highly flammable, continuous fuel beds, especially in desert ecosystems.
- Old growth fire-resistant trees were logged and replaced with trees that are not fire resilient

3. Fires Are Now Bigger, Faster, and More Intense:

- Satellite records since the 1980s show a sharp increase in average fire size and acres burned per year.
- Extreme fire behavior (fire tornadoes, plume-driven fires) is more common.
- Fires can now create their own weather, making them unpredictable and harder to control.

Yes, fire historically and traditionally was beneficial in fire adapted ecosystems. But those fires weren’t operating in the same conditions there are today.

We have to understand the differences when speaking about wildfires.

* I also do understand the need and importance of prescribed burns and support them when it’s safe to have them. They’re the only way we will remove the deadfall and undergrowth fuel that fuels these devastating wildfires.

BUT prescribed burns when it’s cool, less dry, and not windy are not the same as summer wildfires during red flag conditions.

What’s up with writing on the rocks?

There’s a lot of common misconceptions about writing on rocks in Sedona. Hopefully with this video it will clear some of them up so visitors can help keep Sedona beautiful by Leaving No Trace.

Q: Why can’t we just leave it on the rocks? A: Because when people see graffiti others will follow - they’ll carve into the rock and also use permanent markers. It’s monkey-see, money- do so we have to remove it before an entire area gets hundreds of instances of graffiti.

Q: Won’t rain just wash it off?
A: We have significant periods of drought - it could be 3 months before it rains. Rain does not remove etchings or carvings.

Q: How is it different than Indigenous Rock Art?
A: Petroglyphs and pictographs on rocks throughout the Southwest were made by Indigenous people over hundreds or even thousands of years. Many in the Sedona area date back 1,000 years old and hold deep cultural, spiritual, and historical significance. They tell stories, mark sacred places, and connect generations to the land.

This is not the same. Scratching your name into the sandstone, chalking it, or using a sharpie isn’t art, it’s vandalism and it is illegal. It erases the natural beauty of the area, disrespects Indigenous heritage, and violates Leave No Trace. Unlike ancient rock art, modern markings on the rock made by tourists have no cultural context, no meaning beyond ego, and no place in wild spaces. We have many ways to tell our stories today in 2025 - pens and pencils, the internet, and books. We don’t tell our stories on rocks.

Q: Why do I have a plastic bottle? How do volunteers know where the markings are?
A: When someone reports graffiti to the forest service or the local nonprofits tasked with cleaning up the trails then a volunteer is tasked with going to remove the graffiti. When we get the coordinates of graffiti we head out with our cleaning supplies.

🌲 What is the Roadless Rule and why does it matter?

The Roadless Rule protects millions of acres of national forest land from road construction, extractive resource use and logging. These areas contain many wild, intact ecosystems in the U.S. and are home to old-growth trees, endangered wildlife, clean drinking water sources, and some of the best backcountry hiking, paddling, and climbing around.

But the benefits go beyond beauty.

🦉 Wildlife: Roadless areas serve as vital habitat corridors for bears, elk, wolves, and other sensitive species. Without roads fragmenting their environment, animals can migrate, hunt, and thrive.

🔥 Wildfire resilience: Intact forests are more fire-adapted. Roads often introduce invasive species, dry out the forest, and provide ignition points. Protecting roadless areas helps prevent human-caused wildfires and maintains healthy, self-regulating ecosystems.

💧 Water: These areas safeguard headwaters and natural watersheds which keep our rivers and streams clean.

The Roadless Rule is constantly under threat by extractive industries. When we chip away at these protections, we lose more than trees: we lose biodiversity, carbon storage, and future climate resilience.

Now that the government has announced its intent to rescind the Roadless Rule we have to stay alert.

I cannot believe it’s almost been a year since we were out in Wyoming celebrating our wedding. 😳

Sitting here reminiscing over some of my fave bridal shots while I ponder where we should go for our 1st anniversary which is in a little over one month!

So, throw me some suggestions: where would you go for a first anniversary in early September? 🤔

When I was broke people would always say “oh but money can’t buy happiness” which yes, objectively that’s true. But it can help with other areas of your life which in turn make you happy, or stressed, or sad.

Can money buy the feeling of happiness? No, of course not. But what makes people happy? Feeling financially secure. Having time to relax. New experiences with friends and family.

It would be insane for me to not admit that going on a trip to Europe and the Alps didn’t make me happy - it absolutely did. And the only way I can travel to these places is with money. So inherently, while money can’t make you happy, it can help you have experiences which DO make you happy.

I think sometimes when we say to people who are struggling or having financial problems that “money can’t buy happiness” then we really devalue or minimize what they’re feeling. Because when I didn’t have money my number one stressor was bills, trying to not go into debt and not ever having an opportunity to relax or just enjoy myself without stressing.

So yes, money can’t buy happiness. But we also should stop pretending like it sure as heck doesn’t help pay for experiences which DO create happy memories.

Endangered species and wildlife are the cornerstone of wilderness areas and our public lands. It’s their home that we get to visit.

Unfortunately multiple steps have been take this year that harms endangered species and their habitats.

One of the ways wildlife will be put at further risk is the decision of the Roadless Rule. The Roadless Rule protects 58 million acres of National Forests spanning 42 states.

Secretary of the USDA Brooke Collins recently announced the agency’s plans to roll back the Roadless Rule, putting wildlife habitats at risk of development like road building, logging, and extraction.

Rescinding the Roadless Rule will require a full rulemaking process, which means public comment periods will likely open within the next month.

How beautiful life is and how lucky I am to have so many places that feel like home ❤️

I’d say something about the glaciers melting but someone would probably come after me crying “fake news” so I guess I’m just glad I get to see it for myself and we can all burn on this planet as it heats up together. 🤷🏼‍♀️🔥

It’s been hard to try and put into words the devastating wildfire that impacted my home national park. The Grand Canyon is such a special place and the North Rim was a quieter side of this beautiful canyon.

After waiting years to stay in the cabins on the north rim I finally decided to stay in one this May. My friend Emilie and I stayed in the historic cabin on the rim, ate at the beautiful dining room at the lodge, and enjoyed a magical sunrise and sunset.

It’s such a special place.

Then, less than six weeks later due to the Dragon Bravo fire…the lodge and cabins burned. The employee housing - gone. The North Rim visitor center, destroyed.

Years of history and memories for thousands of people gone in an instant.

It’s hard to put into words this loss.

And not really anything could’ve prepared me for the fact that less than six weeks later after we took these photos this place would be burned down in a wildfire.

Just the simple act of sitting on a window ledge for a sunrise in a place that will now never be the same.

If you’re ever sad, just remember, nobody can be sad in Europe. You’re probably just sad you’re sitting in the U.S.

Also me: takes Em on my favorite water hike in AZ, does sunsets in Sedona, paddles the Verde River, stays at the cabins on the North Rim with Em, paddles ECC with Kara and Jill, spends two weekends in Idaho for work and paddles with Em and hikes with Kelly, proceeds to take an impromptu trip to Europe where Preston and I visit and hike in Switzerland, Italy, and France.

Okay, okay, so I guess I haven’t done nothing. 🤪

Got my summer alpine lake fix in France. Along with my macaron fix, my crepe fix, my craggy peak fix, my firework fix, Independence Day fix, and champagne fix.

Basically, I love France. �🇫🇷

You can’t eat money; so let’s not sell off or lease off all our public lands.

Paddling into a slot canyon? Only at Lake Powell. Just a short kayak or paddleboard trip from Antelope Point Marina, you can glide through emerald waters straight into the entrance of iconic Antelope Canyon—no hiking permit required. This is one of the most unique ways to experience the Southwest, and it’s surprisingly beginner-friendly!

Start early to beat the wind and boat traffic—launch from the marina (rentals available on-site), paddle about 2 miles through the main channel, and enter the canyon where the red walls start to close in. From there, you can go as far as the water takes you, then dock and hike deeper into the canyon on foot.

It’s peaceful, surreal, and 100% bucket list. Just bring water, sun protection, and a dry bag for your phone—you’ll want pics every 10 seconds.

After last night (June 28, 2025)‘s monumental news about public land sales being removed from the Big Beautiful Bill I know many people have questions.

Hopefully these slides can answer some of those pressing questions, explain what’s OUT of the Bill, what’s still IN the Bill, and the general legislative process.

We did it!

After millions of views, calls, posts, and people using their voices to let our government know we do NOT support selling off public lands - Senator Lee tweeted this evening that the provision regarding land sell-offs was being removed from the Big Beautiful Bill.

This is the true power of grassroots collective action.

It shows your voice truly does make a difference.

The fight for public lands certainly is not over - we have tons of work to do regarding the Roadless Rule rescission and provisions still left within the Bill regarding logging and oil and gas leases. However - this is the time to celebrate our hard work and collective action.

📣A HUGE UPDATE📣

The Senate Parliamentarian ruled the plan to sell millions of acres of public lands would violate the Byrd Rule if left in the “Big Beautiful Bill”.

The Byrd Rule prohibits provisions considered “extraneous” to the federal budget in budget reconciliation bills.

Minutes before the Parliamentarian’s decision regarding the Byrd Rule was released, Mike Lee, who introduced the public lands sell off tweeted:

“here’s what I plan to do:

1. REMOVE ALL Forest Service land. We are NOT selling off our forests.
2. SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE the amount of
BLM land in the bill. Only land WITHIN 5 MILES of population centers is eligible.”

While this is a HUGE win we need to keep the pressure on! That means continuing to call your representatives, posting about public lands, and letting everyone know that you support public lands in public hands!

As soon as we have updated maps we will let you know so we can determine which BLM land may still be at risk.

In the meantime, keep sharing your love and passion for public lands and letting your representatives know that public lands are NOT on the chopping block.

This proposal is the most extreme land sale plan we’ve ever seen, and it stands a real chance of happening with no oversight. Once it passes, there are limited restrictions on which USFS or BLM parcel included.

📞NOW is the time to call your Senator and tell them you strongly oppose this sell-off! Even if you don’t live in Wyoming you should care about this!

MILLIONS of acres of federal public lands across Idaho and Oregon are flagged as land that could be sold as part of a budget reconciliation bill that’s in the Senate.

This proposal is the most extreme land sale plan we’ve ever seen, and it stands a real chance of happening with no oversight. Once it passes, there are limited restrictions on which USFS or BLM parcel included. Some of the most treasured trails and scenic views are on the map released this week of land that could be sold.

📞NOW is the time to call your Senator and tell them you strongly oppose this sell-off!

Here’s a sample call script:

Hi, my name is [Your Full Name], and I’m a constituent from [Your City or ZIP Code].

I’m calling to urge Senator [Last Name] to vote NO on the Big Beautiful Bill—or any bill—that includes provisions to sell off our public lands.

This bill threatens millions of acres of land that belong to all of us. Selling them off to the highest bidder is a betrayal of our heritage, outdoor access, and future generations.

Our public lands are not for profit. They support local economies, wildlife, and a healthy environment. Once they’re gone, we don’t get them back.

Please stand up for public lands and vote NO on this bill.
